Silicon Valley Women in HR...& Friends Mailing and Announcement

Dear Friends.

I hope you are enjoying this holiday season and that the New Year brings you health, happiness, success and contentment.

Before I go further, many thanks to Karen Duffy and Marilyn Messer for planning a very nice year-end dinner.

We are looking forward to seeing you in 2013. Our calendar is at http://ourhrsite.blogspot.com/p/volunteers.htmlif you’d like to save the dates.

Would you like to volunteer to help plan and book the meetings in 2013? On 1/16/13 in Mountain View, our volunteers will meet, determine the speakers and topics, and decide which events they’ll help plan. Many people list this volunteer activity on their LinkedIn profiles and resumes. Details are at http://ourhrsite.blogspot.com/p/volunteers.htmland it’d be great to have YOU join us!

Our Volunteers created a great and varied line-up of topics and speakers for this past year. The 2012 Volunteers included: Belina Pignataro, Christine Young, Delbar Jahanian, CMFC, Jenny Vonderwerth, Judy Pearce, Karen Duffy, Krissy Vollersen, Marilyn Messer, Michael Benjaminson, Susan Harvell, Tatyana Dorokhova and Trudy Schapansky. Good work, everyone!

We had fantastic speakers in 2012 including: Jenny Kahn, PHR, Mary Wang, Susan Miller, SPHR, CCP, Jeanine DeBacker, Terri Griffith, Connie Hampton, Deanna J. Mouser, Margaret O’Hanlon, Eric Petersen and Jenny Vonderwerth. Topics ranged from employment legal updates and workplace investigations to compensation, targeted networking to negotiation skills, the 401(k) and fiduciary liability to building a corporate wellness program. Many of these topics and speakers can also be seen at paid events, and many topics are of interest to those not in Human Resources. Some of our speakers provided useful downloads and you can find them at http://ourhrsite.blogspot.com/p/previous-speakers.html.

We have a page on our site for advertising with links to Amazon products. Our site also has Google ads, and you're welcome to click on relevant links. These links provide a small amount of money to help pay for our domain.

Silicon Valley Women in HR...& Friends Mailing and Event Announcement

Dear Friends,

Happy December!  I hope you're well and enjoying the season.

If you strictly want information about the next event, please look at the links to the right and go to Event Registration.

Many thanks to our volunteers our Volunteers, Jenny Vonderwerth and Krissy Vollersen for planning and leading last month's event, "Do It Yourself Corporate Wellness Programs." Jenny was our speaker and what a wealth of information she is!

The year went quickly in some ways and in other ways, it was long and upsetting.  So here's the good stuff:  more of us are working and the economy has taken a turn for the better.  Here's the rotten, stinking stuff:  I'm disgusted and appalled by the way Americans have been treating each other over politics and politicians.  No matter your political beliefs, there are places to go to confirm facts and it seems to me that a lot of people aren't doing that.

Just after 9/11, do you remember how united our country was?  It's a terrible thing to have that as a unifying event, but it did unify us.  It didn't take long for us to fall apart, have all kinds of scandals, corporate malfeasance and spewed hatred.

I'm a news junkie and go to sites that have actual fact checking rather than opinions.  Why not do the same?  Take out the emotions and look for the facts.  I think we'd be better off tuning out most of the screamers and paid opinionists on TV, radio and the Internet.  How about listening to the "other side" now and then to get new insights and maybe some ideas?  Don't let yourself get caught up in this hatred.

We have a page on our site for advertising with links to Amazon products. Our site also has Google ads, and you're welcome to click on relevant links. These links provide a small amount of money to help pay for our domain.

You can subscribe to the blog, share it on Facebook or Tweet it. Join us on

Because of my commitments I can’t mentor you, and please don’t send me unsolicited resumes. Come to an event and meet someone who can help. I receive a lot of unsolicited resumes (from our group and strangers) and I refer people to the forum at
www.ourhrsite.com/forum. See the blog post for more thoughts. http://marciastein.blogspot.com/2009/02/setting-boundaries-and-professionalism.html

Silicon Valley Women in HR...& Friends Mailing and Event Announcement

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year!

I hope you're well and that you can attend our next event about the first 90 days in a new job. Please note that the event time has changed and we've moved our speaker up 30 minutes. We hope this will work well with your schedule.

If you strictly want information about the next event, please look at the links to the right and go to Event Registration.

Following an event a few years ago, a nice person seeking a new job mentioned how grateful she was for our group.  It gave her a place to go and network, learn new information and share her own experiences.  She said how hard it is to attend when she is working full time and is tired at the end of the day.  Her resolution was to go to events consistently and not stop when she found work.

Nice plan, and like a lot of resolutions, she started and stopped. Each time she landed a job she withdrew from events, and each time she was laid off or looking for another position, there she was again.

This is a common event.  I work full time and sometimes it's hard at the end of the day go to various events.  I go anyway, and 9 times out of 10 I'm very happy I've gone.  It's making that effort that's important and I attend meetings in addition to our events.

We all lead busy lives and you'll help yourself by stimulating your mind, networking and learning what's new out there if you commit to going to events of some kind at least once a month.  There are so many excellent organizations, great speakers to hear and free and paid events, that you won't become bored.

One woman I know is a regular participant in three different groups.  She attends at least one and sometimes more meetings each month.  It seems like everyone knows her and the reason why is that she makes that effort.  She told me this has been invaluable in her role as a businesswoman and she has made a lot of friends this way.

Are you ready to do something good for yourself, too?

Last month I wrote a thank-you to our volunteers who planned and led last years' events and our terrific speakers.  You can view that post by clicking here

Our Volunteers will meet 1/16 to determine our speakers and topics for the year.  If you'd like to volunteer, please register by clicking here.

Our list of previous speakers, their topics and many downloads, are listed on our Previous Speakers' Page.

I hope you're well and that you can attend our next event.
Please note that the EVENT TIME HAS CHANGED and we're moving our speaker up 30 minutes.  We're hoping this will work well with your scheule.

If you strictly want information about the next event, please look at the links to the right and go to
Event Registration.

Margaret O’Hanlon was last month's speaker and her weblink is on our
Previous Speakers' Page. I heard from several people that her presentation was detailed and strategic and there was lively discussion.
Many thanks to our volunteers Jenny Vonderwerth, Karen Duffy, Tatyana Dorokhova and Trudy Schapansky for planning and leading this great event.

Our volunteers recently met to discuss how our year in this group has been going.  We've been very pleased by our speakers!  We also wondered why it is that we have great speakers, a free meeting and relatively low turnout.  We are experimenting with a slightly earlier time for the speaker and hope this helps you.  We'll also have a survey in the near future to learn more about what you'd like to see, what is most useful, what we can improve upon.  Many more people in our group are working in full time roles and it's a bit of a challenge to go to meetings at the end of the day, but it's so worthwhile.

How are you?   Happy September!

If you strictly want information about the next event, please look at the links to the right and go to Event Registration.

Deanna J. Mouser was last month's speaker and her weblink is on our Previous Speakers' Page.  Many thanks to our volunteers Delbar Jahanian, CMFC and Michael Benjaminson for planning and leading a great event.

We're deep in what political analysts call the "silly season."  Passions are running high, debates are happening in person and online.  And sometimes we step in it, and that includes me.  I've used various sites for a long time and am an experienced browser.

I was on Facebook and saw an image on a friend's page I agreed with, and reposted with a comment.  That wasn't the problem.  The issue was that the reposted item carried the somewhat upsetting title of the originating page, and I did not realize this until I started getting comments.  When I realized this was upsetting some of my friends, I deleted the post, explained why and apologized for hurting any feelings.

I'm not backing away from political comments but it is not my desire to hurt people or insult them.  I know how that feels on the receiving end and that's a terrible way to feel.

I bring this up to remind you to watch what you post and how, and keep in mind that if you're checking colleagues or potential candidates, honest mistakes happen.

I'm an involved voter, reading the platforms, studying candidates, looking at sites such as FactCheck and the Voter Participation Center for unbiased information.  TV and radio hosts are interesting, but I'm looking for facts, not opinions.  Voting is our most fundamental right in a democracy and it is our duty to vote and take it seriously.  I wrote about this previously on one of my other blogs.  Part A is at: http://marciastein.blogspot.com/2004/09/precious-and-hard-won-right-to-vote.html.
Part B is at: http://marciastein.blogspot.com/2004/09/and-more-about-voting.html.

We have a page on our site for advertising. I have updated links to Amazon products at present and may add other affiliates. You'll notice our site also has Google ads, and you're welcome to click on relevant links. The focus is on HR and Business, but we are human beings and need relaxation, too!

Silicon Valley Women in HR...& Friends Mailing and Event Announcement

Dear Friends,

How are you?   It's July already - how'd that happen?  This year is flying by.

If you strictly want information about the next event, please look at the links to the right and go to Event Registration.

We had a very interesting speaker last month, Professor Terri Griffith, Ph.D., a Professor of Management at Santa Clara University's Leavey School of Business and the author of "The Plugged-In Manager: Get in Tune with Your People, Technology, and Organization to Thrive."  She talked about how you use negotiation strategies to mix human, technology, and organization decisions.  A copy of her presentation is downloadable from our Previous Speakers page.  She mentioned a few books about negotiation skills and I uploaded links for them and a few more, just click here.

Many thanks again to our volunteers Trudy Schapansky, Christine Young and Jenny Vonderwerth.

I took a courtesy van while my car was in the shop and had a conversation with some fellow riders.  One woman had immigrated first to Canada and then to the USA, and although she likes it here, she is appalled by the political rhetoric and the general feeling in our country.  Canada is very civil in their disagreements, they're polite about it, or so I hear.

A man around my age said his sister just found a job after 3 years of unemployment and although it pays around 50% of her former salary, she's thrilled to have work.  He saw what she went through and how these job losses contribute to the anger and depression we're feeling in America.

If you listen to the extremes of talk radio or watch certain TV shows - you know which ones, you may have a certain impression based on politicians and talking heads.  Of course there are extreme views among everyday people, but most of us are somewhere in the middle.

We are taught at a young age to be polite and civil when we talk, and even among people whose opinions may be different, we know how to listen and discuss, maybe learn from each other, but it's hard to see that represented by politicians and in the media.  There's a lot of screaming and that leaves an impression about who we are, what we're like, how we treat each other.  They're terrible role models.  Sensationalism sells; civil discourse is not high in the ratings.

I've traveled a lot and lived in various places, and I know that Americans are good people.  We want a solid country, a good education and solid economy.  Any disagreements there?  We find small and large moments of kindness.  Tsunami in another country?  Hurricane or forest fires in our country?  We organize drives and raise millions of dollars and blood and platelets and don't ask for anything in return.  We're a very generous country.  You can find many local examples of grass-roots efforts to aid others in society and every now and then, something gets published about those efforts.

What if we started advertising other people's acts of kindness and generosity?  What if we took that link to an article or website and posted it on social media?  It's another way of passing it on and giving other people ideas of how to help or places to donate.

To those who arrived recently and to those who've lived here a long time:  yes, I see the ugliness out there and I also see great possibilities and hope.

We have a page on our site for advertising. I have updated links to Amazon products at present and may add other affiliates. You'll notice our site also has Google ads, and you're welcome to click on relevant links. The focus is on HR and Business, but we are human beings and need relaxation, too!

Because of this volunteer work, family, friends and paid work, unfortunately, I can’t mentor you, and please don’t send me unsolicited resumes. I wish I had the time to individually mentor you, but I don’t. Come to an event and meet someone who can help. I receive a lot of unsolicited resumes (from our group and strangers) and if I’m recruiting for a position or I’m paid to work on the resume, that’s one thing, but other than that, I’ve got other things on my plate. I refer people to the forum at www.ourhrsite.com/forum. See the blog post for more thoughts. http://marciastein.blogspot.com/2009/02/setting-boundaries-and-professionalism.html
