Dear Friends,

How are you? Are you ready for all of the year-end activities? I'm not!

I start my posts with a few personal notes and then delve into upcoming events. You can skip down to event announcements, but I encourage you to read this important update about our group.

We are holding formal meetings once every two months, and for those in-between months, we encourage you to plan coffee, lunch, dinner or an event on your own! You can use our LinkedIn group to publicize your event. This will give you some latitude in location and timing, and that should help more of us come out and meet each other.

With fewer events I'm sending fewer mailings. I do want to mention two special recognition "months" that landed in October.

October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I had two kinds of breast cancer, surgery and chemo in 2000 and I'm fine. The key really is early diagnosis. It used to be that this was a real death sentence as it was for my mom, but it doesn't have to be that way now. Being diligent with your self-exams, having good doctors who take you seriously and don't delay definitive diagnosis, and good treatment are imperative. 

Here are a couple of extra tips. If a friend or colleague says they have breast cancer, don't tell them it's their fault, don't tell them to take vitamins, don't blame their diet. Just ask "how can I best support you" and if they tell you how, do it! Maybe that means a ride, maybe it means a movie. Sometimes it just means you stop by or call.

It was also Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic Violence is not exclusively about hitting, punching, other violence including murder. It's also about emotional abuse, the kind of violence producing bruises you can't see on a person. Please read more about it on this site, and do something about it if you or a friend need help. There are resources and there is hope.

Our November 18 Community Event

This event is open to all, and the topic is “There is a 'Me' in Teams” with our guest speaker ArLyne Diamond, Ph.D. Please RSVP if you're attending. If anything comes up at the last minute and I need to reach attendees, I can't do it unless you have registered. Recent events have pointed out the need for workplace violence training. I received an article from one of our former speakers, Allison West, Esq., SPHR, SHRM-SCP, and am providing the link here. 

Many of us who have dealt with an unhinged employee or has had to walk someone out the door have had that worry: what happens if the person has a gun?

Please review this excellent video on the FBI website, "Run. Hide. Fight." There is great information regarding the active shooter in the workplace, and you can apply this knowledge to other situations.

It makes me very sad to know that we all have to be prepared.

I've been cleaning out some of my accumulated paperwork. You know how it is when you go to a lot of workshops, webinars, seminars and conferences? It's compounded when one creates training materials and workshops as I do, and I had clipped a lot of articles to review or on which to base training. I also shredded old invoices (I keep electronic copies) and was surprised by the number of companies I had forgotten. So many of those companies went under or were acquired, but a couple of them went on to big things. It's interesting to think about these companies, and I always wonder what did them in. Sometimes it is so clearly evident that a college freshman would see the problems, but other things can be far more complicated and nuanced.

I have to say it's fairly liberating to get rid of the paperwork and clean out my filing cabinets, and it feels like there's a real load off of my mind. I'm sure professional organizers have many studies about the benefits. I dedicated myself to discard at least 10 items/day, and sometimes it's much more, other times I'm stretching to reach my goal. It's a wonderful summertime project.

Our team of volunteers met in January, and we decided to hold formal meetings once every two months, and for those in-between months, we encourage you to plan coffee, lunch, dinner or an event on your own! You can use our LinkedIn group to publicize your event. This will give you some latitude in location and timing, and that should help more of us come out and meet each other.

My husband joined a new company and is thrilled with his technical challenges, the team, their professionalism, organization and friendliness. They have an organization where communication is strong and employees are valued. This is the first time in years I’ve heard so many compliments regarding their HR team, benefits and Onboarding. We often hear complaints about Human Resources, even over issues that are not in our control, so this is very refreshing!

In his job search, he had the same comments and frustrations as most job seekers. The resume goes into the “black hole” without as much as an automated response. Long interview cycles with delays in-between and no updates. No professional close after interviewing. It’s so easy to make a call or at least send a note, and it’s the right thing to do.

It was a great reminder of how much these touches mean to candidates and how much it therefore means to the company’s reputation.
