HRCI In Cupertino 2/19/13

Hi, All.

Do you have or are you interested in the PHR, SPHR, or other HRCI certifications?

"The HR Certification Institute will be in Silicon Valley the week of February 18 to visit with our highly valued certified professional base. We are hosting an informal meet and greet and invite you to come out and connect with other HR certified colleagues in the area.  It would be an honor to meet you personally and say “Thank You” for your support of HR certification. We have hosted several of these events over the last few months and found the feedback and information invaluable as we seek to identify ways to expand and improve relationships with our growing credential pool.

Please join us on Tuesday, February 19 from 6pm – 8pm at Park Place Restaurant 10050 S. De Anza Blvd. Cupertino, CA 95014. If you are able to make the event, please RSVP to  janee@hrci.org by Friday, February 8."

Cheers,

Marcia

Silicon Valley Women in HR...& Friends Mailing and Event Announcement

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year!

I hope you're well and that you can attend our next event about the first 90 days in a new job. Please note that the event time has changed and we've moved our speaker up 30 minutes. We hope this will work well with your schedule.

If you strictly want information about the next event, please look at the links to the right and go to Event Registration.

Following an event a few years ago, a nice person seeking a new job mentioned how grateful she was for our group.  It gave her a place to go and network, learn new information and share her own experiences.  She said how hard it is to attend when she is working full time and is tired at the end of the day.  Her resolution was to go to events consistently and not stop when she found work.

Nice plan, and like a lot of resolutions, she started and stopped. Each time she landed a job she withdrew from events, and each time she was laid off or looking for another position, there she was again.

This is a common event.  I work full time and sometimes it's hard at the end of the day go to various events.  I go anyway, and 9 times out of 10 I'm very happy I've gone.  It's making that effort that's important and I attend meetings in addition to our events.

We all lead busy lives and you'll help yourself by stimulating your mind, networking and learning what's new out there if you commit to going to events of some kind at least once a month.  There are so many excellent organizations, great speakers to hear and free and paid events, that you won't become bored.

One woman I know is a regular participant in three different groups.  She attends at least one and sometimes more meetings each month.  It seems like everyone knows her and the reason why is that she makes that effort. She told me this has been invaluable in her role as a businesswoman and she has made a lot of friends this way.

Are you ready to do something good for yourself, too?

Last month I wrote a thank-you to our volunteers who planned and led last years' events and our terrific speakers.  You can view that post by clicking here

Our Volunteers will meet 1/16 to determine our speakers and topics for the year.  If you'd like to volunteer, please register by clicking here.

Our list of previous speakers, their topics and many downloads, are listed on our Previous Speakers' Page.

We have a page on our site for advertising with links to Amazon products. Our site also has Google ads, and you're welcome to click on relevant links. These links provide a small amount of money to help pay for our domain.

You can subscribe to the blog, share it on Facebook or Tweet it. Join us on
LinkedIn.

Because of my commitments I can’t mentor you, and please don’t send me unsolicited resumes. Come to an event and meet someone who can help. I receive a lot of unsolicited resumes (from our group and strangers) and I refer people to the forum at
www.ourhrsite.com/forum. See the blog post for more thoughts. http://marciastein.blogspot.com/2009/02/setting-boundaries-and-professionalism.html

Silicon Valley Women in HR...& Friends Mailing and Announcement

Dear Friends.

I hope you are enjoying this holiday season and that the New Year brings you health, happiness, success and contentment.

Before I go further, many thanks to Karen Duffy and Marilyn Messer for planning a very nice year-end dinner.

We are looking forward to seeing you in 2013. Our calendar is at http://ourhrsite.blogspot.com/p/volunteers.htmlif you’d like to save the dates.

Would you like to volunteer to help plan and book the meetings in 2013? On 1/16/13 in Mountain View, our volunteers will meet, determine the speakers and topics, and decide which events they’ll help plan. Many people list this volunteer activity on their LinkedIn profiles and resumes. Details are at http://ourhrsite.blogspot.com/p/volunteers.htmland it’d be great to have YOU join us!

Our Volunteers created a great and varied line-up of topics and speakers for this past year. The 2012 Volunteers included: Belina Pignataro, Christine Young, Delbar Jahanian, CMFC, Jenny Vonderwerth, Judy Pearce, Karen Duffy, Krissy Vollersen, Marilyn Messer, Michael Benjaminson, Susan Harvell, Tatyana Dorokhova and Trudy Schapansky. Good work, everyone!

We had fantastic speakers in 2012 including: Jenny Kahn, PHR, Mary Wang, Susan Miller, SPHR, CCP, Jeanine DeBacker, Terri Griffith, Connie Hampton, Deanna J. Mouser, Margaret O’Hanlon, Eric Petersen and Jenny Vonderwerth. Topics ranged from employment legal updates and workplace investigations to compensation, targeted networking to negotiation skills, the 401(k) and fiduciary liability to building a corporate wellness program. Many of these topics and speakers can also be seen at paid events, and many topics are of interest to those not in Human Resources. Some of our speakers provided useful downloads and you can find them at http://ourhrsite.blogspot.com/p/previous-speakers.html.

We have a page on our site for advertising with links to Amazon products. Our site also has Google ads, and you're welcome to click on relevant links. These links provide a small amount of money to help pay for our domain.

Silicon Valley Women in HR...& Friends Mailing and Event Announcement

Dear Friends,

Happy December!  I hope you're well and enjoying the season.

If you strictly want information about the next event, please look at the links to the right and go to Event Registration.

Many thanks to our volunteers our Volunteers, Jenny Vonderwerth and Krissy Vollersen for planning and leading last month's event, "Do It Yourself Corporate Wellness Programs." Jenny was our speaker and what a wealth of information she is!

The year went quickly in some ways and in other ways, it was long and upsetting.  So here's the good stuff:  more of us are working and the economy has taken a turn for the better.  Here's the rotten, stinking stuff:  I'm disgusted and appalled by the way Americans have been treating each other over politics and politicians.  No matter your political beliefs, there are places to go to confirm facts and it seems to me that a lot of people aren't doing that.

Just after 9/11, do you remember how united our country was?  It's a terrible thing to have that as a unifying event, but it did unify us.  It didn't take long for us to fall apart, have all kinds of scandals, corporate malfeasance and spewed hatred.

I'm a news junkie and go to sites that have actual fact checking rather than opinions.  Why not do the same?  Take out the emotions and look for the facts.  I think we'd be better off tuning out most of the screamers and paid opinionists on TV, radio and the Internet.  How about listening to the "other side" now and then to get new insights and maybe some ideas?  Don't let yourself get caught up in this hatred.
