Silicon Valley Women in HR...& Friends Mailing and Event Announcement

Dear Friends,

How are you doing? Isn't this a beautiful September?

We hold formal meetings once every two months, and for those in-between months, we encourage you to plan coffee, lunch, dinner or an event on your own. You can use our LinkedIn group to publicize your event. This will give you some latitude in location and timing, and that should help more of us come out and meet each other.

I have to update this post as I saw something I had to share. On LinkedIn there was an article about people working killer hours and how this was unproductive. Here's part of a response from a man named Peter Nolan: "One of the reasons that no fortune 500 company has ever been founded by women is exactly because men are willing to work crazy hours for peanuts running the risk that the company will be successful. Women, in general, are not willing to work those same hours based on the same risk reward profile because they don't have to. They can simply marry a man who does this and gain most of the benefits without the work....."

What do you think of that? I was stunned!

Our September 21 Community Event
Our next speaker is our long-time member and volunteer, Rebecca Linquist. Her topic is "The Voice of Leadership." Learn how to evaluate your own voice quality and determine what is preventing you from having a fuller, richer voice, and discover tools you can use to improve your voice quality and change how others perceive you when you speak. Please see the event details and RSVP link by clicking here.

Starting in January 2017, I will no longer send group emails from my personal address. If you're not on LinkedIn, you can follow this blog for announcements and updates.

Silicon Valley Women in HR...& Friends Mailing and Event Announcement

Dear Friends,

I hope you're well.

You can use our LinkedIn group to publicize your event. This will give you some latitude in location and timing, and that should help more of us come out and meet each other.

Hang in there, everyone. We only have a few more months of campaigning! I went to a company to provide some training and I was surprised to know they regularly argue about politics. It's a topic I like to avoid at work - people are so passionate, angry or upset (or all of this and more0 that it seems best to leave that out of work. A new acquaintance said she just dropped an old friend due to different views of the candidates. I would hate to see this kind of response in the workplace, wouldn't you? Do you have political discussions in your workplace?

It's exciting to me to have a great panel discussing recruiting at our next event and I hope you can attend. I have recruited for a long time and this is one of my favorite topics. There are several different types of recruiters and they serve different functions in the process. I'm sure we'll learn a lot in this event.

Our July 20 Community Event
We have a terrific panel led by Vinnie Warren. Our panelists include Jack Warren,  Lesley HunterLaney Donahue-Nott and Steve Kohler. Our topic is "Ask the Recruiter: A Question and Answer Panel Event." Please see the event details and RSVP link by clicking here. If you want to attend you MUST RSVP.

Silicon Valley Women in HR...& Friends Mailing and Event Announcement

Dear Friends,

I hope you're well.

We hold formal meetings once every two months, and for those in-between months, we encourage you to plan coffee, lunch, dinner or an event on your own. You can use our LinkedIn group to publicize your event. This will give you some latitude in location and timing, and that should help more of us come out and meet each other.

I recently wrote about how our group works and how I depend on a lot of people's contributions of time, professional services, and space. I also explained how I pay for the website hosting and domain name through my own checkbook and the ads on our website you may click on along with our Amazon links below my signature. My previous post has information about the cookies on your browser and you can delete them if the ads you see are not of interest.

This a wild presidential campaign and I know we all have opinions about it. I try hard not to bring this into the workplace and into our group [but it's out there on Facebook]. I do want to remind you that this is group was founded to network, inform and support professional women. No, that's not an endorsement: it is a reminder that we have been behind in rights and visibility in the workplace and even in voting. Women and men fought hard for that right.

My mom, a very patriotic first-generation American, always voted. No matter the weather, the demands of work and family, she went to the polls. I imagine there were times she did not think the candidate was perfect, but it is one of our obligations as citizens, a true privilege compared to many other places in the world, and Americans in general have been extremely lax about this. The truth is that if you are waiting for perfection, you won't find it. Vote for the person who most represents the things you believe, whomever that may be. Check for the facts on FactCheck or similar sites, and vote in your local elections, too. Most candidates start locally, establish a track record in votes and display their character for examination.

GO VOTE!

Today I'm writing about our May event and I have a request.

Our May 18 Community Event
We are pleased to announce that Amber George and Jennifer Shih will present "Immigration Basics: Overview for Employers Hiring Foreign National Workers." Please see the event details and RSVP link by clicking here.

Please join our group on LinkedIn so you’ll be updated on announcements and posts. Many thanks to Diane Cusano for presenting "Inspiring Yourself to Thrive by Reframing Your Thoughts." She provided insights, information and exercises that have helped me and I'm sure have helped others.

Silicon Valley Women in HR...& Friends Mailing and Event Announcement

Dear Friends,

How are you? Happy March!

We are holding formal meetings once every two months, and for those in-between months, we encourage you to plan coffee, lunch, dinner or an event on your own!

Two people contacted me about this, and there may be others with the same question about ads that show on the site. I do not control the ads you view on the site. They are controlled by the cookies on your own computer. This is a process called “personalization.” If you shop on Amazon and look at a product, the next time you visit, you’ll see that product along with recommendations for similar items.

One way around that is to clear your cookies on your browser. Another way, and this is more effective for me, is to go to http://www.networkadvertising.org/choices/ and go through their menu of cleaning up advertising and making choices. I do this every couple of weeks and it has helped a lot.

Today I'm writing about our March event, the HR Symposium discount, and a request.
