Dear Friends,
The first part of this email is dedicated to updates and musings, so if you want to skip to the invitation, discounts, and other information, please scroll down. Before I forget, check out our Amazon Ad Day page.
This has been a year of loss for me including several friends and now family members. Sometimes, just when you need something to remind you of important lessons, a friend sends you an article. I was sent “Top Five Regrets of The Dying” and recommend this page.
My husband and I were in Las Vegas and went on the free one-hour culture tour at Zappos.com. They are known for having a great company culture, and they explain that culture in books, tours and even training sessions. It was fascinating to go through their building and meet people who were really excited to be at work. Both shuttle drivers said the pay and benefits were good, but the real reason they loved the company was that they were treated as family. They were valued and cared for. The company even has a coach who can meet with individuals and help them with work or personal goals, and when they reach their goal, it is acknowledged.
I’ve been a long-time listener of KGO Radio, and it’s often going in the background at work or when I’m driving. If there’s a particularly interesting topic, I’ll listen if I can or return to the archives and hear the program. Suddenly this week, they fired most of the hosts and along with those hosts went many producers and others behind the scenes. Claiming they listened to the audience, the station is going to be almost all news. (Do a search and you can find details.)
It was a brutal shock to those being fired and to the listeners. Articles, blogs, tweets and Facebook entries have been slamming the corporate decision and the way it was handled. If you’re linked to me on Facebook, you know I’m one of those who have posted. Both Ronn Owens and Pat Thurston opened their shows by exploring the topic and both mentioned that the company was giving the public what it is demanding. I’ve been on their mailing list for some time, never saw a survey about it and if you see the postings, you know that many people feel betrayed and angry. The station will lose a lot of viewers and I don’t think that’s temporary.
From my experience and perspective, this was handled terribly. Contrast that with the Zappos culture where employees are valued. In addition to being valued, they are kept updated on their finances and know when they have to work harder, and they understand the importance of customer service, knowing what the customers want by soliciting and reviewing feedback and acting on that.
Consider that great things will be relayed about Zappos but Cumulus Media, the owner of KGO Radio, will suffer a bad reputation for years.
We will continue to use this blog for our website, at least for the time being. I started this site so we could write about HR topics and people could receive HRCI recertification points for that. (Scroll down for more info.) It seemed a convenient place to put our extended mailings, and now we have the event information and registration on the site, too. There is a list of pages on the right hand side of the site, and you can explore and find most of the information we previously had up there. I’m still migrating it, and we still have the old site at www.ourhrsite.com/hrindex.html if there is something in particular you need. This site has sharing buttons on the side of the page. If you’d like to repost on some of the other sites, this is an easy way to do so.
REMINDER ANNOUNCEMENT: You can earn HRCI recertification points through blogging and I’ve set up this site so you can be an occasional blogger. You are responsible for adhering to their guidelines, and I cannot guarantee your points.
· Read the HRCI information
· If you’d like to post, write your piece to the HRCI specifications. (My first post is opinion and does not meet their criteria.) Email your post to mstein@ourhrsite.com and be sure to include the subject line, your bio and links to your LinkedIn page and/or website/s. I will not edit posts but will review them quickly if I have time. Otherwise, I’ll simply upload.

In addition to this volunteer work, I have to earn a living. Unfortunately, I can’t mentor you, and please don’t send me unsolicited resumes. I wish I had the time to individually mentor you, but I don’t. With the time I take for this group, my work and my books, I don’t have time left over. Come to an event and meet someone who can help. I receive a lot of unsolicited resumes (from our group and strangers) and if I’m recruiting for a position or I’m paid to work on the resume, that’s one thing, but other than that, I’ve got other things on my plate. I refer people to the forum at www.ourhrsite.com/forum. See the blog post for more thoughts.

Silicon Valley Women in HR… & Friends Mailing and Event Announcement
Dear Friends,
The first part of this email is dedicated to updates and musings, so if you want to skip to the invitation, discounts, and other information, please scroll down.
It feels like a long time since I’ve seen you or written a long note to you. We went to France in September and the activity leading up to the trip then our return with a lot of catch-up at work and at home had me stretched to the limits when my computer died. I had a little warning that it was the hard drive, and I backed up like crazy in two places and bought a new computer. Do you ever feel like you need an IT expert to get your simple laptop going?
Each step of this new computer has been challenging in surprising ways. This computer did not recognize many of my old programs, and that had an impact on our website. SO…THE BIG NEWS: our website is moving to Blogger for the time being. We’re at http://ourhrsite.blogspot.com, a site I started so we could write about HR topics and people could receive HRCI recertification points for that. (Scroll down for more info.) It seemed a convenient place to put our extended mailings, and now we have the event information and registration on the site, too. I’m still migrating it, and we still have the old site at www.ourhrsite.com/hrindex.html if there is something in particular you need.
I saw an obituary today for Krista Henley. She and Rossella Derickson spoke to our group about "Dealing with the Difficult Boss - Shifting to Successful Interactions." They presented useful information and I remember having great feedback about the event. Their presentation is a download on our Previous Speakers page. She had a recurrence of her breast cancer after being free and clear for many years, and when we exchanged notes last year, she wrote that her biggest concern was for her kids. She died October 11, and there will be a celebration of life at 2:00 Sunday, November 13 at the Chaminade Resort in Santa Cruz. In lieu of flowers, the family requested that donations be made to accounts set up to help support her children. You can email krista.memorial@gmail.com for an automated response with instructions.
Now back to the mailing.

Silicon Valley Women in HR… & Friends Mailing and Event Announcement
Dear Friends,
The National Cancer Institute has clearly written information about all kinds of cancers. http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics Information that is reliable and updated can make all the difference. I’m speaking to you as an 11 year survivor. I put together a page with tips for people who are undergoing treatment for breast cancer, and some of the tips are also useful for other surgeries. Several people in our group have contacted me over the years regarding their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one, and this information can be helpful. http://www.ourhrsite.com/hrw_cancertips.html
When I told others about my cancer, some reacted with kindness and compassion and others said really stupid and hurtful things.

Unfortunately, we had to cancel our October event. The next event will be held November 16 and our year-end dinner will be held December 21. Notices will be sent about 2 weeks in advance.
I’ve got a few topics to cover in this mailing. First up: it’s breast cancer awareness month. There are many factors that create risk for breast cancer, but the main reason women and men are at risk is that we have breast tissue.
When I told others about my cancer, some reacted with kindness and compassion and others said really stupid and hurtful things.
One of the best things I heard came from the wonderful Gail Boddy who was my manager at the time. Bill and I had planned a vacation. Linda Lopez, my wonderful friend and a terrific recruiter, was to sit in for me during my vacation. The timing was such that we’d take our trip and then I’d go right into surgery and chemo.
Gail told me I was going to be fine, and knowing I’d be out for surgery and treatment following the trip, we secured Linda for a longer period. Gail said she would be sure to hold a spot for me when I was ready to work, and she was true to her word. I was a recruiter / staffing manager but it was a contract and she had no obligation to help me as she did. It meant and still does mean the world to me that she reassured me and let me know I’d have work, too. Thank you, Gail!
Next topic: many people have been upset about the extra fees banks are charging or considering charging. I am a businessperson and believe banks have the right to make money. I also believe that when customers should evaluate business relationships and determine if they’re still working well for you. If you don’t like the new fees, consider moving your account. I use two credit unions: KeyPoint Credit Union and TechCU, and have been very happy with them. [NOTE: I saw an article after I posted that if approved, TechCU will change to a mutual savings bank next year. Stay on top of the news as this may or may not happen. http://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/print-edition/2011/10/07/tech-cu-ready-for-big-change.html]
And finally…I’ve written two books and sell them in person, via Amazon, Scribe and other sites, and the “Strained Relations” book is also available to order through libraries and any bookstore. I had a surge in sales in September and don’t know why, but if you bought a book, thank you!

The first part of this email is dedicated to updates and musings, so if you want to skip to the invitation, discounts, and other information, please scroll down.
Our next event is September 21 and event details are on our website. The event is open to the community, and if you’re bringing a friend, that person must register herself/himself. Please follow directions for responding. www.ourhrsite.com/hrw_RSVP.html I will not be sending a reminder this month so mark the date!
I’ve seen a lot of articles and information about shows commemorating September 11. We all remember what we were doing on that day, how we heard about it and what we saw. For me, watching more shows would not help and would only distress me. It’s a personal decision, and you may feel very it’s helpful. I want to talk about the aftermath.
We had an HR Women’s event scheduled for the next night, September 12. I made the decision to hold the event. Our speaker was there to talk about women and personal self-defense. It was hard for me to concentrate. My feeling was (and is) that no matter what happened, life goes forward, we need to be strong, be brave and carry on even when our hearts are broken.
I remember how united our country was at that time, and I had never experienced such unity. My sister and brother-in-law were abroad and strangers were coming up to them and expressing sympathy for our losses. It felt as if the world stood with us.
And now, 10 years later, look at us. Take a good, hard look and tell me if you like what you see. I still see people who are smart, engaged in activities, getting new skills, creating and ready to build new things, and I also see the divisions in our country and it sickens me.
I don’t really write about politics here and I’m not singling out any one party. I’m disgusted by the way many of our politicians have been behaving, by their inability or unwillingness to act in the best interests of our country. I am a news hound and I listen to many points of view, but the vitriol expressed and lies repeated on both ends of the spectrum are dangerous to our mental health and affects our ability to listen to other points of view and make necessary compromises.
I wrote about our country in 2003 on www.ourhrsite.com/call_to_action.html and even held a rally about unemployment, but I stopped writing a couple of years later. I started a blog called “Repair America” (http://repairamerica.wordpress.com) in 2008 and stopped writing that year. Between other commitments and being totally frustrated with our state of being, I felt I was spending time venting and being annoyed and burning myself out.
Maybe it’s time to be annoyed again and take to my keyboard or camera. In a few weeks, I’ll post about an incident I had with a TSA inspector this summer.
For now, I’m taking a little time to reflect on life, help people at work, help others via our group, and breathe in – breathe out. I hope you’ll join me.
Now back to the mailing.
