Silicon Valley Women in HR… & Friends Mailing and Event Announcement

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year!

The first part of this email is dedicated to updates and musings, so if you want to skip to the invitation, discounts, and other information, please scroll down.  Before I forget, check out our Amazon Ad Day page.

This ia a big anniversary year for us as our first meeting was held January 1997.  We've been around for 15 years!

Our group is powered by volunteers, and I want to honor them.  I'm the obvious face of the group thanks to the website and emails, but this is not "Marcia's Group."  It's your group and it runs on volunteer power.  There is absolutely no way we'd have had the topics and speakers we've had unless we had our group of volunteers.

Over the years we've had many volunteers and if you're watching, you can see some people volunteer a lot over time.  I can't tell you how much I appreciate them and I hope you do, too.  Each invitation includes the event volunteer's name and I always thank them in our meetings.  To see more about volunteering and see the names of our 2011 volunteers, please go to http://ourhrsite.blogspot.com/p/volunteers.html, and if you'd like to volunteer for 2012, please review the information on that page and use the form to register.  The meeting is January 11.

Last year was quite the year.  I previously mentioned the loss of family and friends, and have done a lot of thinking about that, how precious and unpredictable life is.  It was a strong reminder that I have some personal goals that shouldn't wait:  time to seize the day!

Bill and I did an extraordinary amount of traveling last year including trips to France and England.  We love to travel but we still haven't won Lotto and haven't retired early, so now I'm embarking on a new job search.  That's a good goal!

Last year was also a big year for my computer problems, and I had to purchase a new laptop in November.  The process was time-consuming and aggravating. I'd love to have a personal IT person, wouldn't you?

Because of my computer problems, unfortunately, some of the speaker suggestions that were emailed to me cannot be found.  Please use our form at http://ourhrsite.blogspot.com/p/potential-speakers.html if you would like to submit your idea.

Because of this volunteer work, family, friends and paid work, unfortunately, I can’t mentor you, and please don’t send me unsolicited resumes. I wish I had the time to individually mentor you, but I don’t. With the time I take for this group, my work and my books, I don’t have time left over. Come to an event and meet someone who can help. I receive a lot of unsolicited resumes (from our group and strangers) and if I’m recruiting for a position or I’m paid to work on the resume, that’s one thing, but other than that, I’ve got other things on my plate. I refer people to the forum at www.ourhrsite.com/forum. See the blog post for more

Thanks so much to Marilyn Messer and Karen Duffy for planning our year-end dinner.  It was a lovely evening and a great way to end our year.  Thank you!
