Silicon Valley Women in HR...& Friends Mailing and Event Announcement

Dear Friends,

Happy March!

Before I go on, we have a discount to the HR Symposium and it's posted on our Discounts page. Be sure to check out the other discounts listed.

Many thanks to last month's speaker, Jenny Kahn!  Her presentation about using LinkedIn was deeply informative and she provided us with a download posted both on the Previous Speakers page and on the page with Job Seeker Resources.  Our volunteers did a fabulous job of organizing the event.  Thanks to Jenny Vonderwerth, Christine Young and Belina Pignataro for your hard work.

I read two articles recently that spoke to me.  The first was by Peter Shankman, a media guru who has a mailing list in the thousands and sends email to his list three times a day.  His topic is "Auto-Responder Email replies: Ur doin it WRONG."  Our mailing list has over 1500 names, and each time I send a group message, I receive auto-responders and bounced messages.  I encourage you to read Peter's article and re-think your messages.

The other article was RenĂ© Shimada Siegel's "5 Reasons You Need to Meet in Person."  She had some great reminders about why meeting people in person (in addition to online) is so important.  Do you find you're depending more on LinkedIn and Facebook in order to avoid meeing people in person?  You're missing out on some relationship building.

We now have a page on our site and for advertising. I have links to Amazon products at present and may add other affiliates. You'll notice our site also has Google ads, and you're welcome to click on relevant links.  I am going to customize this when I have time to reflect different categories: HR and Business, Entertainment and Shopping.  The focus will be HR and Business, but we are human beings and need relaxation, too!

REMINDER ANNOUNCEMENT FOR HRCI POINTS: You can earn HRCI recertification points through blogging and I’ve set up this site so you can be an occasional blogger. You are responsible for adhering to their guidelines, and I cannot guarantee your points.
· Read the HRCI information
· If you’d like to post, write your piece to the HRCI specifications. (My first post is opinion and does not meet their criteria.) Email your post to mstein@ourhrsite.com and be sure to include the subject line, your bio and links to your LinkedIn page and/or website/s. I will not edit posts but will review them quickly if I have time. Otherwise, I’ll simply upload.

Because of this volunteer work, family, friends and paid work, unfortunately, I can’t mentor you, and please don’t send me unsolicited resumes. I wish I had the time to individually mentor you, but I don’t. With the time I take for this group, my work and my books, I don’t have time left over. Come to an event and meet someone who can help. I receive a lot of unsolicited resumes (from our group and strangers) and if I’m recruiting for a position or I’m paid to work on the resume, that’s one thing, but other than that, I’ve got other things on my plate. I refer people to the forum at www.ourhrsite.com/forum. See the blog post for more

Silicon Valley Women in HR...& Friends Mailing and Event Announcement

Dear Friends,

Happy February! Before I go on, we're going to have a discount to the HR Symposium and that will soon be posted on our Discounts page.  Be sure to check out the other discounts listed.

Have you been busy? If you're working, are you seeing an increase in activity? I'm looking for my next job (contract/contract-to-hire corporate recruiter) and am seeing a lot more activity. It's very encouraging yet I'm in competition with a lot of great candidates. If you have job openings at your company in any field, any level, will you share them on our forum?

I've added a page to our site and this one is for advertising. I have links to Amazon products at present and may add other affiliates. You'll notice our site also has Google ads, and you're welcome to click on relevant links.

Because I am a job seeker, I'd like to make some observations and suggestions. Most of my clients have been small companies, but I've always set up an auto-responder so candidates know I have received their resumes. It's a very simple thing to do. I'm seeing more companies using an ATS (Applicant Tracking System) for resume intake, and that's useful for the company and should be smooth for the candidate. The problem is that they seem to be getting more burdesome for candidates, and companies are missing out on some great people. I wrote about this on my other blog and recently attended a webinar where the presenter was relaying the same information. Each click you demand of a candidate makes more people fall by the wayside.

I recently saw a post for a contract recruiter, and the post led to the company's ATS. I had to create a user name, password, upload a resume - so far, not too bad - but the next page basically had me insert my resume line-by-line. When you've done a lot of contracting and have in-house roles mixed in, it's just not possible to use one of those forms! So guess what? I did not apply for a job that was a match for my skills.

I strongly believe that HR as a function needs strong customer service skills. We have internal and external customers and need to be mindful of everyone's experiences. Poor experiences means you lose out on candidates, information, and with social media gossiping, your company could lose out for a long time to come.

An HR Manager I know is working at a company and is very happy about their HR Intranet, referring all employees with questions to that website before they see her. I know several people at that company and have heard many complaints about it. It's way too complicated, hard to maneuver, hard to find information. And sometimes people just need to talk to you.

My recommendation is to have a user study for internal and external sites. If you implemented software, you've been through training, you may have set it up, you've spent hours on it so you may not be aware of other people's difficulties in using the site. Look for 5 people and watch them maneuver, see if they can find what they need to find and where the stumbling blocks are. This groundwork will really pay off for you and your customers.

Silicon Valley Women in HR… & Friends Mailing and Event Announcement

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year!

The first part of this email is dedicated to updates and musings, so if you want to skip to the invitation, discounts, and other information, please scroll down.  Before I forget, check out our Amazon Ad Day page.

This ia a big anniversary year for us as our first meeting was held January 1997.  We've been around for 15 years!

Our group is powered by volunteers, and I want to honor them.  I'm the obvious face of the group thanks to the website and emails, but this is not "Marcia's Group."  It's your group and it runs on volunteer power.  There is absolutely no way we'd have had the topics and speakers we've had unless we had our group of volunteers.

Over the years we've had many volunteers and if you're watching, you can see some people volunteer a lot over time.  I can't tell you how much I appreciate them and I hope you do, too.  Each invitation includes the event volunteer's name and I always thank them in our meetings.  To see more about volunteering and see the names of our 2011 volunteers, please go to http://ourhrsite.blogspot.com/p/volunteers.html, and if you'd like to volunteer for 2012, please review the information on that page and use the form to register.  The meeting is January 11.

Last year was quite the year.  I previously mentioned the loss of family and friends, and have done a lot of thinking about that, how precious and unpredictable life is.  It was a strong reminder that I have some personal goals that shouldn't wait:  time to seize the day!

Bill and I did an extraordinary amount of traveling last year including trips to France and England.  We love to travel but we still haven't won Lotto and haven't retired early, so now I'm embarking on a new job search.  That's a good goal!

Last year was also a big year for my computer problems, and I had to purchase a new laptop in November.  The process was time-consuming and aggravating. I'd love to have a personal IT person, wouldn't you?

Because of my computer problems, unfortunately, some of the speaker suggestions that were emailed to me cannot be found.  Please use our form at http://ourhrsite.blogspot.com/p/potential-speakers.html if you would like to submit your idea.

Silicon Valley Women in HR… & Friends Mailing and Event Announcement

Dear Friends,

The first part of this email is dedicated to updates and musings, so if you want to skip to the invitation, discounts, and other information, please scroll down.  Before I forget, check out our Amazon Ad Day page.

This has been a year of loss for me including several friends and now family members. Sometimes, just when you need something to remind you of important lessons, a friend sends you an article. I was sent “Top Five Regrets of The Dying” and recommend this page.

My husband and I were in Las Vegas and went on the free one-hour culture tour at Zappos.com. They are known for having a great company culture, and they explain that culture in books, tours and even training sessions. It was fascinating to go through their building and meet people who were really excited to be at work. Both shuttle drivers said the pay and benefits were good, but the real reason they loved the company was that they were treated as family. They were valued and cared for. The company even has a coach who can meet with individuals and help them with work or personal goals, and when they reach their goal, it is acknowledged.

I’ve been a long-time listener of KGO Radio, and it’s often going in the background at work or when I’m driving. If there’s a particularly interesting topic, I’ll listen if I can or return to the archives and hear the program. Suddenly this week, they fired most of the hosts and along with those hosts went many producers and others behind the scenes. Claiming they listened to the audience, the station is going to be almost all news. (Do a search and you can find details.)

It was a brutal shock to those being fired and to the listeners. Articles, blogs, tweets and Facebook entries have been slamming the corporate decision and the way it was handled. If you’re linked to me on Facebook, you know I’m one of those who have posted. Both Ronn Owens and Pat Thurston opened their shows by exploring the topic and both mentioned that the company was giving the public what it is demanding. I’ve been on their mailing list for some time, never saw a survey about it and if you see the postings, you know that many people feel betrayed and angry. The station will lose a lot of viewers and I don’t think that’s temporary.

From my experience and perspective, this was handled terribly. Contrast that with the Zappos culture where employees are valued. In addition to being valued, they are kept updated on their finances and know when they have to work harder, and they understand the importance of customer service, knowing what the customers want by soliciting and reviewing feedback and acting on that.

Consider that great things will be relayed about Zappos but Cumulus Media, the owner of KGO Radio, will suffer a bad reputation for years.

We will continue to use this blog for our website, at least for the time being. I started this site so we could write about HR topics and people could receive HRCI recertification points for that. (Scroll down for more info.) It seemed a convenient place to put our extended mailings, and now we have the event information and registration on the site, too. There is a list of pages on the right hand side of the site, and you can explore and find most of the information we previously had up there. I’m still migrating it, and we still have the old site at www.ourhrsite.com/hrindex.html if there is something in particular you need. This site has sharing buttons on the side of the page. If you’d like to repost on some of the other sites, this is an easy way to do so.
