Silicon Valley Women in HR...& Friends Mailing and Event Announcement

Dear Friends,

Happy December!  This year sure has flown by, hasn't it?

I hope you can attend our Holiday Party.  This event is open to the community.  You don't have to be a woman to attend and if you have a child in college or high school, it's nice to bring her/him along.

If you strictly want information about this event, please look at the links to the right and go to Event Registration.  Before you go, please check out the links at the bottom of this page.

The holiday season can be a lot of fun, and it can also be difficult for a lot of people.  Movies, TV shows, even commercials make us yearn for a family we may not have.  As much as I like Facebook, I see the perils in it.  We tend to post the times when we're happiest with others, engaged in some fun or fulfilling activity, and not mention when we're going through tough times.

This tendency to not post challenges or sadness may give others the skewed idea that all of life is fun for others, and if we're having a bad day or going through something harsh, we're all alone in it.

Being a person with life experience has a plus side and that is perspective.  I know we don't have perfect lives all of the time and understand why people post the positive things.

Life has ups and downs, and although I could have done without some of the downs, I'm grateful for them.  They make me appreciate the good times all the more.  If you're a little down, there are ways you can feel happier, and one of the best ways is to do something nice for someone else.  You can volunteer, donate money or items, forward a resume, mentor someone, serve food at a shelter...I'm sure you have some good ideas, too.

A doctor who spoke to our group years ago said that if you're blue, put on the music you liked when you were a teen and you'll feel better.  It works for me!

Idit Stefanson and Lisset Nevarez planned last month's event with Maya Raber of Tulip Management.  Her topic was "Leading Change" and I already used some of her insights in my interactions at work.  Thank you all!

Because of my commitments I can’t mentor you, and please don’t send me unsolicited resumes. Come to an event and meet someone who can help. I receive a lot of unsolicited resumes (from our group and strangers) and I refer people to the forum at www.ourhrsite.com/forum. See the blog post for more thoughts. http://marciastein.blogspot.com/2009/02/setting-boundaries-and-professionalism.html
